Pope declares climate change is nature’s reaction to ‘the abuse of the goods God placed in her’ in leaked message set to spur world’s Catholics to fight global warming

‘A leaked copy of Pope Francis’ eagerly awaited encyclical on the environment calls for urgent action to protect the Earth and fight global warming, which he says is ‘mostly’ due to human activity and the burning of fossil fuels.

The draft opens by saying climate change is the Earth’s way of protesting ‘irresponsible use and abuse of the goods that God placed in her’.

The Vatican said the document, obtained in draft form by the Italian magazine l’Espresso, was not the final version, which will remain under embargo until its release on Thursday.

One Vatican official called the breach ‘heinous’.’
