Exorcise the Devil From Your Diet
A changing tide in dietary advice in recent years has placed sugar directly in the firing line.
The white stuff has been vilified, strung up as the enemy – the root cause of spiraling obesity rates and ill health.
A diet high in sugar can leave you feeling sluggish, lacking in energy and subject to wild surges and falls in blood sugar levels, which can encourage hunger and drive you to make unhealthy choices.
But, for many, the world without sugar is a reality too terrifying to face – a dietary step too far.
Despite this, growing numbers of people are taking the plunge, banishing sugar from their kitchen cupboards and embracing an unsweetened lifestyle.

Countless celebrities are blazing a path, from Kate Hudson to Eva Longoria, Jennifer Aniston to the UK’s Caroline Flack, ditching the sweet stuff – and the stunning results are clear to see.
While celebrities can rely on personal nutritionists, trainers, and dietitians to get them in shape, such a seemingly drastic lifestyle change can feel a mountain too high to climb for the average person on the street.
Here, a team of nutritionists tells Daily Mail Online five easy steps that can help make a sugar detox appear realistic, an achievable feat that is within the grasp of us all.
1. CHOOSE WISELY
The first step on the road to cutting sugar out of your diet is to focus when shopping and pay more attention to food labels.
A closer look at the products you put in your basket can help make the detox more of a gradual change – and therefore ultimately, hopefully, more sustainable.
Leading nutritionist Dr. Marilyn Glenville, author of Natural Alternatives to Sugar, told Daily Mail Online: ‘You need to become a label reader to understand what is in the food you eat.
‘Truly, don’t fall for the marketing hype on the front of the packet.’
But, when scrutinising food labels, where should you start?
The most important part of the nutritional information adorning the back of any packet of food is the ingredient list, Dr. Glenville explains.
‘This tells me exactly what is in the food,’ she said.
‘Anything ending in “ose” – glucose, sucrose, fructose, lactose, maltose – is a form of sugar, as are honey, agave, molasses and syrups like corn and rice syrup, not forgetting glucose-fructose syrup – high fructose corn syrup.
‘The higher up the ingredients list, the more sugar the product contains.’
Dr. Glenville said the first step is to cut out all savoury foods that contain added sugar.
The next step is to stop adding sugar to your hot drinks and other foods.
‘Next, have a look at the sweet foods you are eating on a regular basis that contain added sugar,’ she added.
‘Those cereal bars that seem “healthy” may be loaded with sugar.’
