How Alert Are You?

With Christmas festivities now less than a month away, you can find your social schedule building up and playing havoc with the amount of sleep you get.

And a new study suggests that this lack of sleep could be affecting our alertness.

The study shows that only four per cent of people are as alert as an athlete, while over 60 percent have the reaction times of someone who has consumed alcohol.

Now a new tool can reveal how alert you really are by comparing your reactions times to people including an OAP, athlete and someone who has consumed alcohol.

The tool, by Web-Blinds, an Nottingham-based blind firm, will tell you whether your reaction instincts are the same as an athlete (up to 0.155 milliseconds), a well-rested person (0.156 to 250 milliseconds), someone who has been drinking alcohol (250 to 280 milliseconds), or an OAP (over 280 milliseconds).

Kirsty O’Sullivan, a spokesperson for Web-Blinds.com, said: ‘The festive season is well and truly here and its hectic social schedules can play havoc with the amount of sleep we get.

‘Losing a little sleep here and there might not seem a big deal, but it dramatically affects our reactions, with studies showing that a lack of rest can have more of an impact on our reaction times than alcohol.’
