‘Diesel drivers face new charges to drive into congested town centres, under controversial air quality plans to be published today.
Long-awaited plans to tackle air pollution will include proposals for so-called ‘clean air zones’ in the worst affected areas.
But, with the general election looming, the plans have been watered down to limit the immediate impact on the drivers of Britain’s 12 million diesel cars.
One Government insider said the plans had been ‘airbrushed’ and would now contain no figures on the scale of the charges that drivers of older diesel vehicles are likely to face in the coming years.
Theresa May has also insisted that the strategy includes proposals for a ‘targeted’ scrappage scheme that will compensate some drivers who bought their cars in good faith.’
