‘Justice for Grenfell – jail those responsible’: Heartbreaking Grenfell Tower memorial wall becomes an outlet for community’s anger
‘Grenfell Tower residents have called for people to be jailed over the devastating inferno with furious messages among tributes on the community’s heartbreaking memorial wall.
Seventeen people have been confirmed killed in the blaze that ripped through the 24-storey block in White City, west London, on Wednesday morning. But it is feared the death toll could soar into the hundreds, with many still missing.
While the working class and diverse community struggles to come to terms with the loss of so many lives – emotions are running high.
On the tribute whiteboard erected along a wall of a community centre, one person fumed: ‘Justice for Grenfell – jail those responsible. Forever in our prayers.’
Another message simply said: ‘Never let this happen again.’ While one resident wrote: ‘The council should have listened.’
Grenfell Tower is owned by the borough council in Kensington and Chelsea, but the management of the building is the responsibility of an independent company – Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO).
Many in the community now believe they should be held responsible for the fire, after residents were found to have warned the organisation about ‘appalling’ fire safety in the block.’
