Crumbling roads to get £1 billion upgrade: Councils to use money to revamp A-roads and fix bottlenecks that blight the transport network

‘Local councils across England are set to benefit from a multi-billion pound fund to improve local roads, transport secretary Chris Grayling said last night.
In the budget two years ago, former chancellor George Osborne said every penny raised in Vehicle Excise Duty in England would be used to repair crumbling roads.
This resulted in the creation of the National Roads Fund, with £5.8billion was collected from VED in the 2016/17 financial year.
Prior to last night’s announcement it was envisaged that the NRF would be ring-fenced for motorways and major A-roads.
