I learned of the Charlemagne prize when Pope Francis recently received this honor. Having recently commented on this occasion and the prize, I only offer here a brief refresher: The Charlemagne Prize is one of the most prestigious European prizes. It has been awarded annually since 1950 by the German city of Aachen to people who contributed to the ideals upon which it has been founded. The sponsors…quote Kurt Pfeiffer: “the Charlemagne Prize reaches into the future, and at the same time it embodies an obligation – an obligation of the highest ethical value. It is directed at a voluntary union … Continue reading

From my post on The Freemen, I introduced the larger-than-life Harm and the person who soon became his charge, Erin.  Erin has grown quite curious of Harm, his background, and the history of those Harm often refers to as “my people.”  Another of Harm’s “people,” Bern, explains…you have to go back to Charlemagne – or, as Bern calls him, “Carl the Butcher.” From The Last of the Freemen, by Carl Trotz: “So Carl the Butcher,” Bern continued, “he was in the business of killing, conquering people, taking their land, demanding tribute from the survivors in perpetuity. Common enough, the Romans … Continue reading

Europe is struggling to live up to the vision of its founders, Pope Francis has said in a powerful speech that asked: “What has happened to you, the Europe of humanism, the champion of human rights, democracy and freedom?” I could write yet another post on this current Pope’s destructive attitude toward Europe, individual freedom, cultural destruction, and economic barbarism; yet, this has grown too easy when he continually offers gems such as these: “Their new and exciting desire to create unity seems to be fading. We, the heirs of their dream, are tempted to yield to our own selfish … Continue reading

I have read a captivating novel, The Last of the Freemen, by Carl Trotz (his blog can be found here).  From the Amazon description of the novel: In a future America, trapped under a brutal and corrupt regime, Erin Gordon becomes a target for reasons beyond her control. Help comes to her from an unlikely source, as her neighbors – the secretive, agrarian descendants of suppressed medieval freemen – prove willing and able to intervene. Accepting their protection, she witnesses a people – unbeknownst to the world – who hold stubbornly to their traditions, and remain defiant in the face … Continue reading

I will begin where I ended in my last post on this topic: The Turkish Bazaar Ankara aids, trains, shelters and otherwise supports those causing the destructive conditions in Syria and Iraq.  Members of the President’s family are allegedly in the middle of a smuggling operation for oil from the war-torn regions. Turkey is a key contributor to causing the conditions necessary to create a flood of refugees. And Europe is willing to pay Turkey to help solve this problem. It should be obvious that the problem will not be solved by Turkey even after these measures. Visa-Free Travel One … Continue reading

I have taken the title from a line in When Money Fails, by Gary North: Wilhelm Röpke was not the most technically competent free market economist of our time, but he was the most accurate one. He was the one economist in the free market tradition who has forthrightly acknowledged that social theory is broader than economic theory. Economics is a subset of social theory, not the other way around. Röpke spent a great deal of time thinking about the moral foundations of the modern social order. The issue being addressed is economic, the division of labor society: This is … Continue reading

Merkel’s open borders pronouncement is the gift that keeps on giving in this libertarian debate about borders and immigration. I understand quite well the theory of immigration in a theoretical libertarian world. Property owners decide who is allowed on their property (it is interesting – many open-borders libertarians are also the first to demand that a property owner cannot decide regarding things like baking wedding cakes and taking wedding photographs).  Any unclaimed / unowned land is available to whoever wants to mix his labor with it. I agree with this theory – it is a good libertarian theory.  But we are living … Continue reading

The Byzantine Empire was mainly comprised of an array of small towns and seaports connected by a developed infrastructure. Production was very high, and there was a notable growth in land ownership. The Byzantines followed a Christian lifestyle which revolved around the home, where women dedicated themselves to the upbringing of their children. There were also various public places where men sought relaxation in their leisure hours. From A.D. 500 to A.D. 1200, Byzantium was the wealthiest nation in Europe and western Asia. Its standard of living was unrivaled by other nations in Europe, and it led much of the … Continue reading

On the recent edition of Mises Weekends, Jeff Deist interviews Dr. Jörg Guido Hülsmann.  The topic is “Nation, State, and Borders.”  It is a worthwhile interview.  Fair warning: Hülsmann offers views similar to those of Hans Hoppe on these matters.  Quite importantly, he makes the distinction of nation vs. state.  It is a distinction worth internalizing for those who want to consider the application of libertarian theory in this world populated by humans. From the interview, I learned of an essay written by Murray Rothbard in 1994, entitled Nations by Consent: Decomposing the Nation-State.  As is often the case, when I … Continue reading

One hundred years and counting.  Remember: they hate us for our freedom. Here was one nation promising another nation the land of a third nation, wrote Arthur Koestler, who, dismissing the [Balfour] declaration as an impossible notion, an unnatural graft, called it a “white Negro.” –          From One Palestine, Complete, by Tom Segev The Baby What was the Balfour Declaration? The Balfour Declaration (dated 2 November 1917) was a letter from the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. It read: His Majesty’s government view with favour the … Continue reading

I mean by “myth of redemptive violence,” in a nutshell, the quasi-religious belief that we may gain “salvation” through violence.  People in the modern world (as in the ancient world), and not least people in the United States put tremendous faith in instruments of violence to provide security and the possibility of victory over their enemies.  A number of trust people put in such instruments may be seen perhaps most clearly in a number of resources they devote to preparation of war. –        Ted Grimsrud, The Good War That Wasn’t – and Why it Matters. Matthew 7: 15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.  16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles?  17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.  18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.” It is generally accepted by historians that the Paris treaties at the end of the Great War – and especially the Versailles (so-called) Treaty imposed upon Germany – directly contributed … Continue reading

It must be my week for posts about Trump… Ross Douthat has written a piece for the New York Times: “The Party Still Decides” (HTLRC). Calling on Lenin From Ross: POLITICAL parties are mentioned nowhere in the Constitution…. You would think this would end the conversation – well, in some countries maybe.  Not in banana republics. What did some of the founding fathers (for lack of a better term) think about political parties? There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in … Continue reading

The press – mainstream and otherwise – is going over-the-top on Trump-Hitler comparisons.  Some are direct, some more subtle.  I offer an examination of this comparison – what is fiction, what is fact? Fiction Let’s look at the history of Hitler prior to becoming German Chancellor, and see how Trump measures up.  Admittedly, this isn’t an exhaustive listing (just the highlights), but hopefully, it will suffice: In 1923, he attempted a coup in Munich to seize power. What was this coup? The Beer Hall Putsch, also known as the Munich Putsch, and, in German, as the Hitlerputsch or Hitler-Ludendorff-Putsch, was a … Continue reading
