‘Clashes have erupted between Turkish police and suspected militants of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in the country’s troubled southeast. The latest fighting erupted outside the headquarters of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) in the main Kurdish city of Diyarbakir on Sunday evening. AFP said gunshots were heard across the violence-hit region. However, it […]

‘Libya’s former dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s son, Saadi, has appeared in a Tripoli court on charges of murder over repression of protesters during the North African country’s 2011 revolution. The court hearing took place on Sunday and Gaddafi’s third oldest son attended his trial in a prison uniform. The judge, however, consulted with a defense lawyer […]

The federal government is about to pay doctors who speak with patients about the type of medical care they want when they are “near death.” The rule announced on Friday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid service will reimburse, starting January 1, 2016, healthcare providers if they have conversations with Medicare patients about advance planning–also known as end-of-life discussions, reports WSJ. Make no mistake about it, this is about cutting the cost for the government of patient care. Notes WSJ: It is a delicate issue, however, because end-of-life discussions also are likely to lower health-care spending—which could lead to claims … Continue reading

Tom Woods interviewed Matt Zwolinski on Matt’s Basic Income Guarantee (BIG) proposal, and Matt’s belief that it is a libertarian proposal.  It is worth listening to the discussion if you have an interest on this topic.  To make a long story short: if you think the idea is cuckoo, you will only think this all-the-more after listening to several of Matt’s responses.  If you think the idea is…libertarian, a critical listen should shake your belief. I have written a few posts on Matt’s views: certainly regarding his BIG proposal; regarding his concerns about BIG as a libertarian proposal (don’t get … Continue reading

“We know now that in the early years of the twentieth century this world was being watched closely by intelligences greater than man’s and yet as mortal as his own. We know now that as human beings busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacence men went to and fro over the earth about their little affairs … In the thirty-ninth year of the twentieth century came the great disillusionment. … Continue reading

With Winter right about the corner, it is time to begin to focus upon building up an arsenal of remedies to get us through the cold and flu season.  Not surprisingly, these are not traditional over the counter meds but rather  a variety of herbal remedies that you can concoct yourself from inexpensive ingredients not the least of which are herbs that may be growing in your yard or in the surrounding locale. For preppers, the importance of learning to use herbal remedies is that if the time ever came when traditional medicines were not available, sickness would spread and … Continue reading

Voter ID laws have been challenged because liberal Democrats deem them racist. I guess that’s because they see blacks as being incapable of acquiring some kind of government-issued identification. Interesting enough is the fact that I’ve never heard of a challenge to other ID requirements as racist, such as those: to board a plane, open a charge account, have lab work done or cash a welfare check. Since liberal Democrats only challenge legal procedures to promote ballot-box integrity, the conclusion one reaches is that they are for vote fraud prevalent in many Democrat-controlled cities. There is another area where the … Continue reading

La Rochefoucauld said that it is easier to give good advice than to take it, to which he might have added that it is also easier to agree with good advice than to act on it. Enacting wisdom is a little like speaking a foreign language that is pronounced perfectly in the head but comes out of the mouth with a strong accent. If good advice were easy to take, the world would long ago have been perfect. Last week I was writing a chapter of a book on medicine and poetry in which I quoted Doctor Johnson to the … Continue reading

Now that virtually every nation is entering the bust phase, all are being tested. Booms powered by credit, new markets and speculation are followed by busts as night follows day. This creates a very difficult test for every nation-state facing the inevitable bust: how does the leadership deal with the end of the boom? As the world is about to learn once again, the “fix” may make the next bust even more destructive. let’s start by reviewing what conditions generate booms. 1. An undeveloped nation gains access to new credit, markets and resources and go through a “boost phase” much … Continue reading

German government officials have compelled a small town with just 102 people to take in approximately 750 migrants from Syria and other countries, The New York Times wrote Saturday. Sumte, a small town at the western fringe of the former East Germany, was informed earlier this month by its municipal government that it had been assigned to accept over a thousand of the asylum seekers that have poured into Germany over the course of 2015. The number was so high that mayor Christian Fabel first thought it was a joke, but after a storm of local protest, the figure was lowered … Continue reading
