What Vladimir Putin is up to in Syria makes far more sense than what Barack Obama and John Kerry appear to be up to in Syria. The Russians are flying transports bringing tanks and troops to an air base near the coastal city of Latakia to create a supply chain to provide a steady flow of weapons and munitions to the Syrian army. Syrian President Bashar Assad, an ally of Russia, has lost half his country to ISIS and the Nusra Front, a branch of al-Qaida. Putin fears that if Assad falls, Russia’s toehold in Syria and the Mediterranean will … Continue reading

Once again the Fed’s bite has failed to live up to its bark. Despite months of expectations that it would finally raise rates for the first time since 2006, the Fed continued to sit on its hands while pointing to some unspecified date in the future when all the economic and financial stars will align in a way that makes a 25 basis point increase appropriate. Am I the only one getting bored by the repetition? Just like it has in prior statements, the Fed’s Open Market Committee painted a picture of a stable and growing economy that was just about … Continue reading

Being fat is bad for you, while slimmer people are happier and healthier. Everyone knows that. Just ask Jamie Oliver, who this week revealed that he’d shed two stone by cutting back on meat and consuming a “rainbow” of vegetables. He’s in better shape than any food-obsessed father-of-four has any right to be, and he can’t stop smiling. On the flip side, there are currently more headlines about how the NHS is groaning under the weight of Britain’s obesity epidemic than most of us have had hot dinners. And yet, every once in a while, along comes a snippet of … Continue reading

BREAKING NEWS: Perhaps no economic pronouncement in history has been anticipated, discussed, predicted, dissected, and reported like the Federal Reserve’s momentous decision today not to raise interest rates. The outpouring of relief witnessed today by the financial press is nothing short of cathartic. Fear and anxiety, built up over months, is replaced by relief, even euphoria. This is not to say the hype is unwarranted. On the contrary, the decision to raise interest rates even just 25 basis points would have represented nothing less than the end of an era, as one Bank of American analyst described (courtesy of Zerohedge): … Continue reading

One uneducated visit to your dentist can have devastating effects on your health! 80% of disease symptoms are caused by problems in the mouth, and millions are exposed to disease-promoting dental procedures every day! Unfortunately, this is information that doesn’t get the attention it deserves… until now. My friend Jonathan Landsman of NaturalHealth365.com has been educating the public on the health benefits of an organic diet with high-quality supplementation and healthy lifestyle habits. Now, he’s gotten together with the brightest minds in natural health and healing and organized the Holistic Oral Health Summit, a free, online series that runs from … Continue reading

The Russians are coming! The Russians are coming!”  So echoed the cry this week from the Pentagon, the US media and  Republican candidates for president. How silly.  It seems the Russians have sent six tanks to Syria, some medium artillery and a bunch of military technicians to two bases on Syria’s coast near Latakia.   According to Republican warmongers, the wicked Soviets…ooops, sorry, Russians…are intervening militarily in the five-year old Syrian War and planning new bases in the strategic Mideast nation. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.  The United States has about 800 bases and military installations around the … Continue reading

NOT THIS AGAIN. Yet another incident with passengers taking their carry-on bags during an evacuation. This time it happened in Las Vegas, after a British Airways 777 caught fire during its takeoff roll. I cannot overemphasize how appallingly unsafe this is. Luggage slows people down and severely impedes their access to the aisles and exits, and it turns the escape slides into a deadly slalom. This time it’s particularly striking, because while most evacuations are precautionary, this one was a full-blown emergency. The airplane was on fire. If that isn’t reason enough to leave your things and get the fuck … Continue reading

The biggest shocker in today’s Fed announcement is not that the Fed did not hike: that was telegraphed far away. It is highlighted on  the chart below in red: for the first time ever, one FOMC predicts negative rates in 2015 and 2016. Was it permadove Kocherlakota: probably not, he is out next year…   In retrospect, this too should come as no surprise: over the weekend we asked if “Yellen About To Shock Everyone: Goldman Says The “Fed Should Think About Easing.” The lack of a hike was not a shock, but the negative dot, oh yes. And earlier … Continue reading

It’s a warm, dry afternoon in the mountains of Coto de Caza, a gated community located an hour’s drive south-east of Los Angeles, and Major General William Lyon is showing me a used car. “It’s wonderful to drive,” he says. “As though it were new.” Parked in front of us is a well-pampered Mercedes-Benz: clean, low mileage, plenty of room in the back. Chromed and polished to a mirror shine, the car wears a shade of blue so dark it reads as black from a distance – and one needs to step back a distance to see the car anyway, … Continue reading
