So who’s holding the hot potato of systemic risk now? Everyone. One of the greatest con jobs of the past 9 years is the status quo’s equivalence of risk and volatility: risk = volatility: so if volatility is low, then risk is low. Wrong: volatility once reflected specific short-term aspects of risk, but measures of volatility such as the VIX have been hijacked to generate the illusion that risk is low. But even an unmanipulated VIX doesn’t reflect the true measure of systemic risk, a topic Gordon Long and I discuss in our latest program, The Game of Risk Transfer. The financial industry has … Continue reading

As anyone even slightly aware knows, Americans are being inundated with endless Russian and Muslim propaganda aimed at convincing the American people that it is the United States that stands in the way of peace around the world.  Sophisticated and crude in turns, what the psychologists call passive aggressive, these efforts at mind-control can be seen all across the internet. For years, The Washington Post, always somehow attuned to the latest intelligence, has been sounding the alarm about hundreds of Russian-linked websites aimed at gulling the American public into complacency.  These efforts are about far more than creating fake news, hacking emails, and … Continue reading

Kim Dotcom has called on Twitter to stop ‘censoring’ tweets, saying he’ll create an alternative to the social network if it continues. Dotcom told RT he believes Twitter is targeting tweets about late DNC staffer Seth Rich. Tweeting early Saturday, the Megaupload founder urged Twitter’s Jack Dorsey to “stop messing with our free speech” and warning that if Dotcom creates an alternative platform, “Twitter could be toast within a year”. If you keep messing with our free speech @jack I will build a team to create a Twitter alternative, without censorship. Twitter could be toast within a year. I hear you’re hurting about … Continue reading

In a recent lawsuit against the Silicone Valley tech giant, a former recruiter for both Google and Youtube alleges that his former employer applied filters to their hiring process that were focused on race and gender. Arne Wilberg filed a civil lawsuit in San Mateo Superior Court against Google on the basis that they employ racial and gender discrimination when hiring people to tech positions within the company, violating both state and federal laws prohibiting such activities. Wilberg says he was told by the tech staffing manager to consider only those candidates who were from “historically underrepresented groups.” He also … Continue reading

The Bloomberg news crawler this morning is heralding the heart of our thesis: Namely, that “flush with cash from the tax cut”, US companies are heading for a “stock buyback binge of historic proportions”. This isn’t a “told you so” point. It’s dramatic proof that corporate America has been absolutely corrupted by the Fed’s long-running regime of Bubble Finance. Undoubtedly, the C-suites view the asinine Trump/GOP tax cut not as a green light to invest and build for the long haul, but as manna from heaven to pump their faltering share prices in the here and now. And we do mean a gift just in the nick … Continue reading

Trump’s election to the American presidency despite all conventional expectations disrupted the past patterns and practices of national political governance. Trump’s inconsistent but populist policies have upended the mono-partisan American politics of the late 20th and early 21st century. The two differently labeled wings (Republican, Democrat) of the same statist warfare-welfare political party are now splintered and broken. Since neither wing was able to prevent Trump’s ascendancy, neither is fully capable of holding him in check. In a recent fit of presidential pique President Trump threatened to remove federal ICE (Immigration & Customs Enforcement) agents from California. This due to the mayor of Oakland’s … Continue reading

Inspired by the Saker’s article regarding how far can the Russians be pushed, I ask, how far can the Americans be pushed, not specifically only in Syria, but in general? In his article, the Saker articulated in his regular rational and captivating style, the issue of Russian patience, or should we say frustration, with America’s actions and inactions in Syria. And, as I was reading the article, I began to think about looking at the situation from the other side of the mirror in a tongue-in-cheek manner; looking at it from the American perspective. I thought back to an article … Continue reading

Car companies used to be places where car guys worked. Engineers, gearheads. People who at least liked cars and thought of them as more than commodities – like toothpaste, say. Today, they are places where former insurance company and fast food guys work. Like Jose Tomas, who is – well, was – GM’s chief human resources officer. He’s been fired – apparently – for unspecified reasons after only about eight months on the job. Might have been an ass grabber but probably got axed because he is still a guy. If he was straight, he never stood a chance. Tomas previously held “leading posts” at Anthem, … Continue reading

Much of the media nowadays is portraying itself as heroes of the #Resist Trump movement. To exploit that meme, Hollywood producer Steven Spielberg rushed out “The Post,” a movie depicting an epic press battle with the Nixon administration. But regardless of whether Spielberg’s latest wins the Academy Award for best picture on Sunday night, Americans should never forget the media’s long history of pandering to presidents and the Pentagon. “The Post” is built around the Pentagon Papers, a secret study begun in 1967 analyzing where the Vietnam war had gone awry. The 7000-page tome showed that presidents and military leaders had been profoundly deceiving … Continue reading

I honestly didn’t think anyone could be more delusional than Amy Schumer who believed her threat to leave the country if Donald Trump won would sway voters. (Well, in a way she was right. I think that alone picked up a couple hundred thousand votes for Trump.) But it turns out there’s someone even more delusional than Schumer: corporate America. Hertz pulled its corporate ties with the NRA this week, and now I won’t get a discount anymore. Well, that does it – I’ve changed my mind. I want more gun control! Heck, if we allow total gun confiscation, maybe … Continue reading

Oh yes he did. One of my weekly listens is the interview of Stephen F. Cohen at the John Batchelor Show.  The discussion, as you know, regards the situation of the New Cold War, Russia-gate, etc.  Cohen is one of the few prominent academics and voices that consider a) that in many ways it is the US government that is forcing the issue toward a New Cold War, and b) so-called Russia-gate is a big fat nothing-burger. This week they are discussing the supposed Russian meddling in the election, social media, etc.  At the 17 minute mark of part one, Cohen offers: Being a … Continue reading
