US & South Korea fire tactical missiles, demonstrate ‘deep strike capability’ to Pyongyang
Independence is about a whole lot more than firing up the barbecue, drinking some beer with friends, and shooting off fireworks. It’s about more than blindly waving a flag. It’s about the way we live our lives every single day. And 241 years later, independence is still the most revolutionary act you can commit. Now, regardless of how you feel about this administration or the previous one, I think we can all agree that many of the liberties our parents took for granted are now in trouble. The government, in general, cannot be trusted. The media cannot be trusted. Those … Continue reading →

Is there no limit to the level of disgusting behavior on college campuses that parents, taxpayers, donors and legislators will accept? Colleges have become islands of intolerance, and as with fish, the rot begins at the head. Let’s examine some recent episodes representative of a general trend and ask ourselves why we should tolerate it plus pay for it. Students at Evergreen State College harassed biology professor Bret Weinstein because he refused to leave campus, challenging the school’s decision to ask white people to leave campus for a day of diversity programming. The profanity-laced threats against the faculty and president … Continue reading →

Over the past several decades, cars have become increasingly high tech allowing for computers to take larger roles in the routine functions of the car. Computerized functions have been a boon to consumers, who advantage from greater reliability and efficiency, but also to criminal hackers who advantage from greater vulnerability. Starting around the turn of the last decade tech enthusiasts started toying around with the concept of hacking into cars. So-called “white hat” hackers, who seek out exploits in technology so companies can fix them, successfully attempted to remotely disable a sedan’s breaks and allowed for companies to take hacking … Continue reading →

War is like a big machine that no one really knows how to run and when it gets out of control it ends up destroying the things you thought you were fighting for, and a lot of other things you kinda forgot you had. – Anonymous . When I discuss with others the idea of living in a peaceful, stateless world, I am most frequently asked: “but what about national defense? What if the Chinese, or North Korean, or an aggressive Islamic state, wanted to invade America, destroy our way of life, and enslave us to their regime? How might … Continue reading →

While I am of a certain mature age, and thus sometimes discomforted by President Trump’s seeming Twitter addiction, I am convinced that he is truly the first 21st century American President based upon his communication style. While I frequently disagree with his Twitter content (or regard it as trivial, petty or just weird) he is demonstrating what an economist might call “communication disintermediation.” In simpler terms, removing the middleman media filters who charge the public for their obsolete services. Usually in the business world, ‘intermediation’ is merely a useless rent seeking opportunity often created by state regulation. Not always of … Continue reading →

In 2012 I published this book: Block, Walter E. 2012. Yes to Ron Paul and Liberty. New York: Ishi Press; It was, in effect my love letter to Ron Paul, who, of course, I revere. As is usual in publications of this sort, I searched around for people to write a forward to the book. As is typical on occasions of this sort, my first thought was to ask a famous person to make this contribution. I wanted to maximize the publicity for this book. I was thinking of the usual suspects: Ron Paul himself, Lew Rockwell, Andrew Napolitano, Hans … Continue reading →

It’s not often that tourists get a close-up look at life inside a dictatorship. But on a balmy day in Dayton, Nevada, the first tour group of the season sets foot on Molossian soil. Their passports are examined at the border control desk, before being stamped and dated: ‘REPUBLIC OF MOLOSSIA. PASSPORT CONTROL’. They venture past a booth where a rather sallow, sickly looking creature sits in khaki uniform with white gloves under the legend: customs. Molossia is no average country: it is a micronation of 33 citizens (including a few dogs). There’s also a cat, but he hasn’t been … Continue reading →

I actually forced myself to watch the documentary The White Helmets, which is available on Netflix. It is 40 minutes long, is of high quality cinematographically speaking, and tells a very convincing tale that was promoted as “the story of real-life heroes and impossible hope.” It is overall a very impressive piece of propaganda, so much so that it has won numerous awards including the Oscar for Best Documentary Short this year and the White Helmets themselves were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. More to the point, however, is the undeniable fact that the documentary has helped shape the … Continue reading →

In the first line of the Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776, Thomas Jefferson speaks of “one people.” The Constitution, agreed upon by the Founding Fathers in Philadelphia in 1789, begins, “We the people…” And who were these “people”? In Federalist No. 2, John Jay writes of them as “one united people … descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion, attached to the same principles of government, very similar in their manners and customs…” If such are the elements of nationhood and peoplehood, can we still speak of Americans as one nation and … Continue reading →
