‘Saudi Arabia has sent dozens more armored vehicles and trained troops to help the supporters of Yemen’s President Hadi fight Houthi rebels in the country following months of air bombardments, which have so far failed to break the deadlock between rival camps on the ground. According to reports from the ground dozens of Riyadh tanks […]

‘Dozens of hours of film footage shot in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the fall and winter of 1945-1946 by an elite U.S. military unit was hidden for decades and almost no one could see it. The raw footage, in striking color, languished in obscurity. As the writer Mary McCarthy observed, the atomic bombing of Japan […]

‘USAID, the UK’s DFID and the World Bank are among those covering up for severe human rights abuses against indigenous peoples in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, inflicted during forced evictions to make way for huge plantations, writes Will Hurd. Their complicity in these crimes appears to be rooted in US and UK partnership with Ethiopia in […]

‘Turkey has been acting pretty erratic these past couple of weeks, launching a surprise dual offensive in Syria and Iraq, condemning Russia for alleged ‘oppression’ against the Crimean Tatars, and suspending the Balkan Stream pipeline negotiations. All of this is somewhat unexpected – after all, Turkey had thus far refrained from the US’ pleas to […]

In response to my post, Antonio Gramsci Libertarians, I was offered up the following selection by Hans Herman Hoppe: “A Realistic Libertarianism.” Apparently this is an attempt to put me in my place – a dare, if you will, for me to give to Hoppe the same treatment that I have so lovingly offered to the left libertarians. You see, Hoppe is apparently the poster boy for “right” libertarianism for those who identify as left-libertarians. It may not seem like it for the next 2000 words or so, but trust me…I will have disagreements with Hoppe the realist. Hoppe’s position … Continue reading →
Obese and overweight people who are deficient in vitamin D should take supplements to boost their chances of losing weight, experts have said. The advice comes as a new study warns people who have low levels of the ‘sunshine’ vitamin, are more likely to be obese or overweight. Previous studies have linked a vitamin D deficiency with developing obesity and the risk of related complications, including type 2 diabetes. Researchers at the University of Milan estimated that in northern Italy, severe vitamin D deficiency ranges from six per cent in overweight people to 30 to 40 per cent in those … Continue reading →
[This essay has been adapted from chapters 1 and 2 of Susan Southard’s new book, Nagasaki: Life After Nuclear War, with the kind permission of Viking.] Korean and Chinese workers, prisoners of war, and mobilized adults and students had returned to their work sites; some dug or repaired shelters, others piled sandbags against the windows of City Hall for protection against machine-gun fire. In the Mitsubishi sports field, bamboo spear drills in preparation for an invasion had just concluded. Classes had resumed at Nagasaki Medical College. Streetcars meandered through the city. Hundreds of people injured in the air raids just … Continue reading →
Originally published by Telesur. The dropping of those bombs and the explicit threat ever since to drop more is a crime that has given birth to a new species of imperialism. On Aug. 6 and 9, millions of people will mark the 70th anniversary of the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in those cities and at events around the world. Some will celebrate the recent deal in which Iran committed not to pursue nuclear weapons and to comply with the Non-Proliferation Treaty with requirements not imposed on any other nation. Yet, those nations that have nuclear weapons are either … Continue reading →
There exists an elite club within the world of old discoveries—those special finds that are the oldest of their kind. They are the record breakers that rewrite the history books or completely change our understanding about something we thought we knew. Sometimes, they don’t carry much historical or archaeological value, but they still amaze us with their ability to survive. 10 Bottled Message – 102 Years Old In 1913, 20-year-old Richard Platz stuffed a postcard with his address into a beer bottle and threw it into the Baltic Sea. The message urged the finder to return it to him. But … Continue reading →
