The Earth protects itself from solar storms using an invisible shield known as the ‘magnetosphere’. But because Earth’s magnetic poles are continually moving, the magnetosphere is weakening. This means our planet is increasingly vulnerable to the potentially devastating effects of solar flares. Now, Joseph Pelton, former dean of the International Space University, in Illkirch-Graffenstaden in France, has called for scientists to take action by creating a massive magnetic shield to protect Earth. Solar storms are eruptions of magnetic energy from the sun’s surface. When this magnetic energy is suddenly released, this accelerates the hot gases near the surface, which can … Continue reading →

A few weeks ago, the IRS published its quarterly “name and shame” list in the Federal Register. That’s the list federal law requires the agency to maintain of individuals who give up their US citizenship. The official name is “Quarterly Publication of Individuals, Who Have Chosen to Expatriate.” Whatever you call it, getting on this list makes you an enemy of the state – in an instant, you are blacklisted. The image of former US citizens living tax-free in some tropical paradise is an irresistible populist target. Rep. Sam Gibbons (D-FL), referring to expatriates, spoke of “the despicable act of … Continue reading →

How did Byzantium endure for 1,000 years after the fall of Rome? One of my reading projects over the past year is to learn more about empires:how they are established, why they endure and why they crumble. To this end, I’ve recently read seven books on a wide variety of empires. The literature on empires is vast, so this is only a tiny slice of the available books. Nonetheless, I think these 7 titles offer a fairly comprehensive spectrum: How Rome Fell: Death of a Superpower (Adrian Goldsworthy) War and Peace and War: The Rise and Fall of Empires (Peter … Continue reading →

In accepting the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto to fly to Mexico City, the Donald was taking a major risk. Yet it was a bold and decisive move, and it paid off in what was the best day of Donald Trump’s campaign. Standing beside Nieto, graciously complimenting him and speaking warmly of Mexico and its people, Trump looked like a president. And the Mexican president treated him like one, even as Trump restated the basic elements of his immigration policy, including the border wall. The gnashing of teeth up at The New York Times testifies to Trump’s triumph: “Mr. … Continue reading →

What a mess! In the crazy Syrian war, US-backed and armed groups are fighting other US-backed rebel groups. How can this be? It is so because the Obama White House had stirred up the war in Syria but then lost control of the process. When the US has a strong president, he can usually keep the military and intelligence agencies on a tight leash. But the Obama administration has had a weak secretary of defense and a bunch of lady strategists who are the worst military commanders since Louis XV, who put his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, in charge of … Continue reading →

Live Science is reporting that more parents are refusing to vaccinate their children now than a decade ago because they simply do not see a need for vaccination. Researchers have found that in 2013, 87 percent of pediatricians surveyed said they encountered vaccine refusals from parents of their patients, up from 75 percent of pediatricians who said the same in 2006. Intelligent parents who refused to vaccinate their kids understand how unnecessary and dangerous vaccines are and such parents see the payoff, their kids tend to remain healthier with fewer colds and infections. Vaccine-preventable diseases are rare these days and … Continue reading →
