No more abductions, no more censorship: Sri Lanka’s government
‘Sri Lanka’s new president, Maithripala Sirisena, has pledged to dismantle the authoritarian rule of the former president, Mahinda Rajapaksa, after voting him out after a decade.
Sirisena’s new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe reassured reporters on Friday that they are “free to report whatever [they] want without the fear of being abducted.” He also pledged to lift an enforced internet censorship by the former regime.
Following Sirisena’s surprising victory in the presidential election, and his official swearing-in ceremony on Friday night, January 9, the 63-year-old veteran politician undertook not to intimidate the media or block websites anymore.’
