GCHQ’s mass internet surveillance ruled unlawful

‘GCHQ mass surveillance on the internet was unlawful, a tribunal has ruled.

The spy agency breached human rights in the past in the way it accessed data from the US National Security Agency (NSA), according to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal.

The IPT ruled in December that current policies and methods operate within the law, but on Friday ruled that previous they had not.

The legal challenge, brought by civil liberty groups, is one of a series launched in the wake of the revelations from former CIA contractor Edward Snowden. It is the first one GCHQ has lost.’
