EU censures death sentence for Egypt’s Morsi
‘The European Union has denounced the death sentence handed down to Egypt’s ousted president Mohamed Morsi, saying the penalty was not in line with international law.
In a statement released on Sunday, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said, “The court decision to seek the death penalty… was taken at the end of a mass trial that was not in line with Egypt’s obligations under international law.”
Egypt has to guarantee defendants’ right to a fair trial and an independent inquiry, Mogherini said, adding that the 28-nation bloc believes Morsi’s sentence will be revised upon appeal.’
