In the last episode of the latest Sherlock Holmes series, the protagonist finds himself up against a new nemesis, the ‘one man he truly hates’, Charles Augustus Magnussen.
Indeed, if it weren’t for a quick bullet to the head and the apparent return of Moriarty, Magnussen may well have succeeded in bringing about Holmes’ ruin. His weapon of choice against Sherlock? His memory.
But, while the characters in the episode remain fictitious, the ‘Mind Palace’ memory technique employed by both Holmes and Magnussen certainly isn’t.
Known at the Method of Loci, the technique has reportedly been used since ancient Roman times, and involves using a known route to aid recollection of often unrelated objects or information.
