‘It is hard to imagine a time since the turbulent 1960s when America has seemed so near the breaking point. Examples of our collective anguish are everywhere, and there is fear rising in some quarters of society that if we don’t get a handle on our collective anxieties, fears and loathing, our divisions will continue to deepen and lead to a total unraveling of our social fabric.

One of the most recent cases in point comes from Modesto, California, where a fake warning on Facebook of a man trying to attack women in the city went viral. Not only was the post false, police say, but the man to whom the post referred wound up becoming the victim of a crazed mob.

Police said the post included details of the man – his description and, more importantly, where he could be found. It didn’t take long, cops said, before a group of men took the law into their own hands.’
