Closing time for Britain’s nightclubs: Nearly half of the UK’s late night venues have shut in the past ten years as extended pub hours, smoking ban and squeeze on finances take their toll
‘Nearly half of all nightclubs in Britain have been forced to close in the past decade as extended pub hours, the smoking ban and financial difficulties take their toll, new figures reveal.
The number of late-night venues across the UK has dropped from 3,144 in 2005, to just 1,733 this year, according to the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR).
The organisation warns that the closures have left the UK worse off ‘culturally, socially and economically’, with experts claiming they could also impact youth employment.’
