Iain Duncan Smith vows to overhaul ‘perverse’ sickness benefits
‘Britain’s “perverse” sickness benefits system will be overhauled to help more than hundreds of thousands of people back into work and stop them from being “written off” by society, Iain Duncan Smith is to announce.
Mr Duncan Smith, the Work and Pensions Secretary, will say that the sickness benefits system is “too simplistic” and is in “dire reform” because it declares people as either fit or unfit for work.
He will say that rather than taking such a “binary” approach people need help and support to gradually encourage them back into work, whether on a part-time basis or in a different role.
Under the plans, those on sickness benefits who are capable of some form of work have to actively to look for a job if they want to keep on claiming.’
