‘Four members of an alleged human-trafficking gang have been arrested over the deaths of 71 migrants found rotting in an abandoned truck on an Austrian motorway.

The victims included eight women and four children – the youngest a girl between one and two years old and three boys aged eight to ten.

Many of the bodies had decomposed, suggesting they had been dead for several days in the back of the air-tight refrigerated lorry that usually carried frozen chicken.

Authorities initially estimated the death toll at 20 to 50, but raised it after towing the truck to a refrigerated warehouse and counting the bodies.’
