Revealed: Council workers who snoop on private data are rarely punished

‘Fewer than one in 10 council workers is being punished for privacy breaches which include in one instance using local authority CCTV cameras to film a colleague’s wedding.

A report published today by Big Brother Watch found evidence of more than 4,000 data breaches over the past four years – yet fewer than 400 council workers were disciplined.

In some cases, council staff were found to have accessed material “for personal interest”.

In one instance, a social worker left papers containing confidential records about children and information linked to sex offenders on a train, and in another, an unencrypted laptop containing the details of 200 schoolchildren was stolen.’
