Tory rebels to stop pro-EU spending
‘David Cameron has a week to avoid his first defeat since the election after Tory rebels vowed to join Labour and call for a ban on spending taxpayer money on keeping Britain in Europe.
On the first day back from the summer break, Eurosceptic Conservatives plan to vote for a Labour amendment barring public spending during the EU referendum campaign.
As many as 40 Tory MPs are willing to back the change unless Number 10 backtracks on removing the so-called “purdah” period normally in place for referendums.
Purdah blocks governments from spending public money or using civil servants to help one side during elections and referendums, thereby ensuring neutrality.’
