Australian PM Tony Abbott faces challenge from Malcolm Turnbull for party leadership
‘Tony Abbott, Australia’s prime minister, has called a party leadership vote to be held in Canberra within hours after Malcom Turnbull, a senior minister, launched a challenge.
In a brief and decisive statement, Mr Abbott said he was dismayed by the chaos in his party and pledged to fend off the challenge announced by Mr Turnbull in Canberra just two hours earlier.
“The prime ministership of this country is not a prize or a plaything to be demanded,” Mr Abbott said.
“It should be something which is earned by a vote of the Australian people.”‘
