China Reminds the World that the UN Charter Must Be Defended as Product of the Victory over Fascism

Preparatory to President Xi Jinping’s participation at the UN General Assembly, China’s Foreign Ministry released a statement Monday on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, reiterating that the UN Charter, the product of the victory over fascism in WWII, must be upheld and strengthened as the guide to international relations today.

Xinhua reports that the Foreign Ministry paper “says that it is important to build a new type of international relations featuring win-win cooperation and a community of common destiny. It also calls for greater democracy and the rule of law in international relations…. the 70th anniversary of the UN is an important opportunity for the international community to review history; uphold the outcome of the world anti-fascist war, and look ahead to the future so as to turn the vision of the UN Charter into reality at an early date….

“The United Nations is an outcome of victory against fascism and embodies the hope for peace and development. The United Nations has been the most representative and authoritative intergovernmental organization ever, and accomplished a great deal over the past seven decades.” the paper says.

“‘Seventy years on, the UN Charter remains as relevant as ever,’ the paper says. It calls for the international community to renew the spirit of the Charter and enrich, reinvigorate it in light of the times and the needs of the world,” according to Xinhua‘s report.
