New Zealand has no mandate to follow Australia into Syria, says Prime Minister John Key

‘Prime Minister John Key says New Zealand will not take part if other countries send troops into Syria and it would take a Security Council resolution for New Zealand to consider any involvement.

Mr Key met with Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott yesterday and discussed the response to Syria, including refugee intakes and Australia’s decision to undertake air strikes on Islamic State targets within a week.

Mr Key said Australia could make its own calls on the issue, but he did not believe there was a mandate to get involved in Syria.’
