Silent Base: British Duct Tape Is Golden in Bahrain
‘To the dismay of human rights campaigners, the British government has started the construction work on a controversial naval base in the tiny Persian Gulf state, where human rights abuses, arbitrary arrests, crackdowns on protests, torture and political prisoners are unabated. No doubt the base, which is mainly funded by the Al Khalifah regime, is a reward for British silence over the rights violations in Bahrain, which is home of the US Fifth Fleet.
What’s cynical is that the base will be named after a previous naval base the UK maintained in the country during the colonial times: HMS Juffair. It is yet another brazen gesture by the British government to celebrate a legacy of repression and colonialism that it should properly be ashamed by:’
