Authorities carried out a controlled explosion after the package was discovered, according to NBC. No warning of the detonation was given beforehand, and officers were reportedly startled by the blast.
However, NBC correspondent Miguel Almaguer tweeted that the mayor of Elizabeth said the blast was not a controlled explosion.’
