Georgetown University Apologizes for Slavery, Promises Admissions Edge to Descendants of Slaves the School Sold
‘As students gear up for fall semester, Georgetown University took a historic step toward reconciling its slave-owning past, formally apologizing for its historical links to slavery and announcing it will recruit descendants of slaves sold by the school in the 19th century.
In 1838, Georgetown University, which is run by the Roman Catholic Jesuit order, sold 272 slaves in an effort to pay off the school’s debts. The New York Times reports the slaves worked for church-affiliated plantations in Maryland, and were sent to work in on Louisiana estates.
“This original evil that shaped the early years of the republic was present here,” Georgetown president John DeGioia told a crowd of students, faculty members, and slave descendants Thursday. “We have been able to hide from this truth, bury this truth, ignore and deny this truth.”’
