Trump administration sanctions Venezuelan vice president over drug trafficking
‘The US has sanctioned Venezuelan Vice President Tareck El Aissami for alleged drug trafficking, saying that he “facilitated shipments of narcotics” and “oversaw or partially owned narcotics shipments of over 1,000 kilograms” from Venezuela.
El Aissami was appointed to the position of executive vice president of Venezuela last month. He has previously served as the country’s interior and justice minister (2008-2012) and the governor of Aragua State (2012-2017).
“He facilitated shipments of narcotics from Venezuela, to include control over planes that leave from a Venezuelan air base, as well as control of drug routes through the ports in Venezuela,”said a statement released on Monday by the US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).’
