Leicester fans chant ‘Gibraltar is ours’ during violent clashes with police in Madrid before Champions League tie
Leicester’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Atletico Madrid was marred by clashes between police and travelling fans in the city centre.
A number of Leicester supporters were left injured when officers in riot gear charged crowds gathered in Plaza Mayor a few hours before kick-off.
Videos also emerged of fans targeting police with missiles and chanting, ‘You Spanish b******s, Gibraltar is ours’ as well as airing the infamous World War II song referencing German bombers.
Earlier local authorities said eight Leicester followers had been arrested late on Tuesday night for ‘causing a mess’ and they will appear in court on Thursday.
But the ugliest scenes occurred shortly after 5pm on Wednesday evening, when what had been a pleasant atmosphere in the city’s main square, the locations supporters were instructed to gather, turned tense.
According to witnesses, police attempted to clear the people drinking and singing by using excessive force. Several videos and pictures on social media showed fans with injuries caused by baton strikes, while others documented unsavoury actions by those in Leicester colours.
