Major blow for EU: Serbia loses faith in bloc as support for Brussels ‘plunges’

‘European Union hopes of gaining another member are quickly going down the drain as Serbia is losing faith in the bloc – and gets closer to Russia.
Newly elected Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić was congratulated by EU leaders this week on his victory as they see him as the key to the nation’s accession into the EU.
His Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) gained power in 2012 on the promise of gaining EU membership, when 70 per cent of Serbs wanted to join the Union.
However, the congratulatory words may have been too soon because over the past five years Serbs have lost faith in the bloc with the backing for joining now at 43 per cent, with 35 per cent against becoming a member, Srđan Cvijić, a Serbian political analyst for the Open Society European Policy Institute said.’
