Indian guru jailed for 20 years on rape charges amid intense security

‘An Indian court has sentenced Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, a controversial popular guru whose conviction has sparked some deadly street protests, to 20 years in prison for raping two of his devotees.
A spokesman for the Central Bureau of Investigation, which investigated the case, said late on Monday that Singh would serve two consecutive 10-year-terms for the two rape convictions.
Media had earlier quoted lawyers and government officials that the twin sentencing would run concurrently for 10 years.
Utsav Singh Bains, a lawyer for the victims, that the sentence was pronounced at a makeshift court in the town of Rohtak in the northern state of Haryana. Bains asked India’s federal investigations bureau to investigate dozens more alleged cases of abuse.’
