Catalonia referendum: Spain sends armed police to hunt for ballot boxes to BLOCK vote
‘Armed police in Catalonia are on the hunt for voting papers, ballot boxes and leaflets as part of a desperate Spanish government bid to quash the upcoming independence referendum.
On Friday, police confiscated more than 100,000 campaign leaflets and raided several print works and newspapers offices.
Catalonia, the north west region of Spain, will on October 1 vote to decide whether or not the region should declare a republic outside of Spain’s control.
The Spanish government, which sees the independence referendum as an illegal act, has vigorously tried to block the ballot.
Earlier this week, the government approved tough measures aimed at preventing Catalonia from using Spanish state money to pay for the vote.’
