Are you intentionally making mistakes at work to make yourself look incompetent? Are you purposely sabotaging your presentations? Are you setting yourself up for failure as an instructor? Hopefully, the answer is no. Yet the vast majority of men I see who want to be influential fail to master the three tips I’ll share today. But I’m getting ahead of myself. Men spend a lot of time, money, and effort learning to be more persuasive speakers and negotiators. And for good reason — mastering these skills can reap huge returns when it comes to business and personal success. But what if … Continue reading

I remember being told as a kid that it was important to wear a hat in cold weather because 80-90% of your body heat escapes through your head. As it turns out, this isn’t true — I was fed a load of bull. You don’t in fact lose more heat from your head than other parts of the body. Studies conducted by the US Army cold weather research labs clearly show we lose heat evenly across the surface of the body (with some variation in the neck and head when you start to exercise, although this regulates itself within minutes). But hats still … Continue reading

Nothing makes a man feel as sharp and debonair (and makes the ladies swoon) as when donning a tuxedo. Unfortunately, “black tie” is an often misunderstood dress code, leading men to end up looking more like Lloyd and Harry in Dumb and Dumber than 007. You can thank rental outlets and high school proms for a lot of the misconceptions. Actors have worn them, and so have Presidents — and for that matter, so have actors who became Presidents. Most men, though, will go through life without ever having tried a cowboy boot on. My advice? Don’t be that guy. Give it a shot. You don’t have to be a cowboy to wear and appreciate Western boots. Although you’ll get more use out of them if you take up Western dancing and rodeo — a man can enjoy a touch of Western style in his outfits now … Continue reading

Custom suits and imported silk ties look great, but they’re not a lot of use to young men in their late teens and early 20s. Even if you could afford that kind of a wardrobe (most can’t), there’s no place to wear it – it’s far too formal for socializing with 20-somethings, and very few men are walking out of college and straight into high-powered financial or legal offices. So much of the advice on how to dress well as a man isn’t all that useful for high school and college students, or even for post-grad students and working 20-somethings. … Continue reading
