O envy, the root of all countless evils, and cankerworm of the virtues! All the vices, Sancho, bring some kind of pleasure with them; but envy brings nothing but irritation, bitterness, and rage. –        Don Quixote I have been thinking more about my afterthought to my post on the continued importance of the US dollar to the global financial system.  I think the main story is to be found in the afterthought – and I am wondering how I missed this the first time. In the end, it is a story of envy.  Unlike jealousy, envy does not merely covet … Continue reading

If there’s one core belief that has guided and inspired me every step of the way, it is this. The United States is an exceptional nation. –        Hillary Clinton, from her recent speech at the American Legion’s national convention in Cincinnati. A lie, falsehood, or misrepresentation to be found in every sentence. And it’s not just that we have the greatest military or that our economy is larger than any on Earth. Well, I will give her that one.  It is true that the US has the largest economy when measured by GDP.  That’s about it…. The United States certainly … Continue reading

Healthy The 2016 UEFA European Championship: I was struck with the team from Iceland.  This team made it to the quarterfinals, finally losing to host nation France.  Iceland has a population of some 330,000 people.  It was reported that up to ten percent of the island’s population were attending the team’s matches in France.  When the team returned to Iceland from their eventual defeat to France, they were greeted by what seemed to be the entire population of the island. A real feel-good story.  Which caused me to reflect: why feel good about this display of national pride? I suspect … Continue reading

There are those in positions of power and authority – call them the elite – who desire that the United States government changes course;  no more global hegemon, as this path has led to the reality of global nuclear superpower confrontation.  I have written words to this effect more times than I can count over the last several years. Of course, just because of this subset of the elite desire this does not mean they can make it so.  The elite doesn’t speak with one voice; there are likely also those in “the elite” that desire to continue in the … Continue reading

The Lost History of 1914: How the Great War Was Not Inevitable, by Jack Beatty. “Never before has any political assembly heard so fine a sermon on what human beings might be capable of accomplishing if only they weren’t human…He leaps forward far beyond the limits of time and space…way above material things, whose inferiority resides in the mere fact of there existence.” –        Georges Clemenceau, commenting on Woodrow Wilson’s January 22, 1917 speech, proposing “peace without victory.” Sadly for humanity, we remain cursed with the results of numerous of Wilson’s utopian-laced dreams. It has been reasonably argued that the … Continue reading

If you have not yet read the recent post by Charles Hugh Smith at LRC, I encourage you to do so (and found in its entirety here).  I agree with it virtually entirely, and Smith does a thorough job on a topic that I have written about for several years – but instead of my writing it again, I will cite Smith.  The title of his post offers a big clue: “Could the Deep State Be Sabotaging Hillary?” …I suspect it’s overly simplistic. I suspect major power centers in the Deep State are actively sabotaging Hillary because they’ve concluded she … Continue reading

I have worked with and for people like Donald Trump. You see, such people have minds that move very fast through mountains of information and are satisfied if they capture about the most relevant 20% of the key points that convey 80% of the story.  They then have no problem telling you how much they know about the subject, while messing up on the 80% of the points that tell only 20% of the story. Their minds can move faster than their mouths at times; while delivering a message to an audience, they might forget about the specific angle that … Continue reading

The Bilderberg Group, Bilderberg conference, Bilderberg meetings or Bilderberg Club is an annual private conference of 120 to 150 people of the European and North American political elite, experts from industry, finance, academia, and the media, established in 1954. A rose by any other name…. It seems the tradition has far deeper roots.  What we have come to understand about the meetings of the elite today – such as meetings of the Bilderberg Group – cannot be distinguished from similar gatherings held over 1000 years ago…. Struggle for Empire: Kingship and Conflict Under Louis the German, 817 – 876, by Eric J. Goldberg. One key source of income for Louis the German was the collection of tribute – for example, collected from the Danes and various Slavic people.  I find this of little noteworthy interest in and of itself; what is noteworthy is the amount – and what that amount represented: …Louis could demand some 335 pounds of silver annually from the Slavs and the Danes….Of course, frequent rebellions made it likely that Louis often received only half the owed tribute in a given year.  Nevertheless, … Continue reading

…a better title for us would be the Least Great Generation, because that’s what we were. –        Roger Simon Roger Simon is the author of I Know Best: How Moral Narcissism Is Destroying Our Republic If It Hasn’t Already.  Simon describes the defining characteristic of this generation not just as narcissistic, but something far more dangerous and pervasive: That form is moral narcissism—a pathology that underlies the whole liberal left ethic today and some of the right as well. The Pathology The short form is this: What you believe, or claim to believe or say you believe—not what you do … Continue reading

[Russia] is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma… –        Winston Churchill, October 1939 While this quote is taken from a time 25 years after the beginning of the Great War, it is certainly applicable to the Russia of 1914 as well…. The Lost History of 1914: How the Great War Was Not Inevitable, by Jack Beatty. “There are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city. All I know is that this must stop, this divisiveness between our police and our citizens.” –        Dallas Police Chief David Brown, in the wake of the recent shooting of five police officers and several others Mr. Brown, most (but not all) of the causes behind the divisiveness are due to decisions made by individuals well above your pay grade. I offer a few simple actions that can be taken immediately in both Washington DC and in every state capital around the country – these actions will … Continue reading

Prompted by a discussion at this post… Stayton July 5, 2016 at 7:56 AM I would even venture to argue that large-scale war is part of their scheme as a means of periodic depopulation (as was the case in World Wars I and II). They need enough productive people to fund their wealth, but they also know that too many people become difficult to control. Black Flag July 5, 2016 at 2:10 PM I’d say if depopulation is the goal, familial destruction has been far more effective. Encourage abortions, provide free abortion on demand, make “not being a mother” a … Continue reading

Spiegel interviewed the presidents of the European Parliament and the European Commission, Martin Schulz and Jean-Claude Juncker in the wake of the Brexit vote.  In all cases, emphasis added is mine. Regarding their phone call on the morning after the vote: SPIEGEL: What did you say on the phone? Schulz: I said: “Jean-Claude, I think this isn’t going well.” Then I advocated for a quick response from the EU. The last thing we need right now is uncertainty. Juncker: I shared his opinion. It was important for the Brits to trigger Article 50 as quickly as possible in order to … Continue reading
