Following a creepy break-in that left her unsettled, Tomi Ledford changed her lifestyle, got some training, and got a gun. Guns.com caught up with Ledford at the 147th National Rifle Association’s Annual Meeting in Dallas earlier this month and she took the time to share her story with us. “I was coming home late with my 2-year-old daughter from visiting my mother’s house and we pulled up to the front of the house with the front door wide open,” said Ledford, whose husband, deployed to Afghanistan, was on the phone with her at the time listening in horror. Her neighbor, … Continue reading

There are good reasons for any good progressive to bemoan the presence of the childish, racist, sexist and ecocidal, right-wing plutocrat Donald Trump in the White House. One complaint about Trump that should be held at arm’s-length by anyone on the left, however, is the charge that Trump is contributing to the decline of U.S. global power—to the erosion of the United States’ superpower status and the emergence of a more multipolar world. This criticism of Trump comes from different elite corners. Last October, the leading neoconservative foreign policy intellectual and former George W. Bush administration adviser Eliot Cohen wrote an … Continue reading

“So brush the insiders dust out of your eyes, my friends, and the communist soap suds out of your Brain, and ask yourselves in all honesty, what on Earth is wrong with the United States simply minding its own business, or with having its foreign policy function primarily for  the safety and benefit of the American people. Which is exactly what we had done for the first 140 years of our existence as a nation, to the incredible advantage of ourselves and everybody else, everybody that is, except a numerically small clique of power lusting conspirators who have somehow inflicted themselves … Continue reading

A life well lived. It’s reasonable to say that Tom Wolfe succeeded in cutting a figure in American life comparable to another white-suited, big-spending writer, Mark Twain. Indeed, I’d argue that Wolfe was near his peak for longer than Twain and on a wider variety of subjects (Twain was the master of writing about being a youth on the Mississippi — a great topic and one he made central to America’s self-image of itself — while Wolfe wrote about an extraordinary range of topics. For example, in the 1960s Wolfe was a master satirist of upscale New York society (e.g., … Continue reading

The drop in temperatures at least merits a “Hey, what’s going on here?” story. Inconvenient Science: NASA data show that global temperatures dropped sharply over the past two years. Not that you’d know it, since that wasn’t deemed news. Does that make NASA a global warming denier? Writing in Real Clear Markets, Aaron Brown looked at the official NASA global temperature data and noticed something surprising. From February 2016 to February 2018, “global average temperatures dropped by 0.56 degrees Celsius.” That, he notes, is the biggest two-year drop in the past century. “The 2016-2018 Big Chill,” he writes,“was composed of two Little Chills, … Continue reading

Blame Charles Dickens. The great novelist of Victorian London was also a great drinker. Quite aside from Bleak House and David Copperfield, he wrote one of the best flaming punch recipes I know. And when he made his famous trip to the US in 1842, he delighted in all the new-fangled beverages he found there, a bit like your annoying friend Instagramming pictures of poorly lit cocktails from their holiday in New York. Two American innovations particularly impressed Dickens. Ice, which the Americans harvested from the great northern lakes (a bit like they do at the beginning of Disney’s Frozen) … Continue reading

Considerations for Home Defense For most of us, home defense and the protection of our family is a primary reason why we chose to own and train with firearms. There is no more intrinsic human right than that of self-defense and the defense of our family. With that in mind, it is of paramount importance that we, as responsible gun owners, be as well trained and prepared as we can be. Home defense planning can seem like a huge and daunting task, but if we break it down into its smaller pieces it is very manageable. Let’s take a brief … Continue reading

WEST ORANGE, N.J.—When I was a young man, and the editor, or the producer, or the executive, would tell me that he was about to censor me, the reason was always, “Your material offends the older people.” Now that I’m one of the older people, when the editor, or the producer, or the executive, tells me he’s about to censor me, the reason is always, “Your material offends the younger people.” Was I born into a time warp? Are we baby boomers the only people in the history of the world with an actual sense of humor? There was always hate … Continue reading

The Constitution explicitly assigned the president the power to sign or veto legislation, command the armed forces, ask for the written opinion of the Cabinet, convene or adjourn Congress, grant reprieves and pardons, and receive ambassadors. The president may make treaties which need to be ratified by two-thirds of the Senate. The president may also appoint Article III judges and some officers with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate.” Wiki on the US Presidency US media figures are in the habit of referring to the president of the United States as the “Commander in Chief of the United States” People who do that badly misunderstand the structure of US government … Continue reading

A review of For Good and Evil: The Impact of Taxes on the Course of Civilization by Charles Adams (Madison Books, 2001). Why can’t American Presidents learn that if you raise taxes on the American people they will vote you out? George Bush crashed because he raised taxes, and Bill Clinton will go down as soon as the people get a shot at him. Maybe the people are awful to react to taxes in such a negative way, but the fact remains that the political consequences of raising taxes today is death. It was not always like this. Americans pay their taxes … Continue reading

Ever thought of adding peas to your smoothie? They might surprise you according to nutritional therapist Jackie Lynch, author of Va Va Voom: the 10-Day Energy Diet. Here, she tells Get the Gloss why she’s going big on those little greens right now: If you’ve avoided peas as a rather ordinary starchy vegetable, think again, because they’re amazingly nutritious, full of vitamins, iron, fibre, antioxidants and protein. They’re also a gorgeous spring vegetable at their peak right now, so it’s time to walk away from the freezer cabinet and discover the fabulous flavour of fresh peas. Peas are actually a … Continue reading

Jordan Peterson draws immense meaning out of the short story of Cain and Abel in Genesis. One of the main concepts in this story is the idea of sacrificing that which you value most, embodied by Abel’s sacrifice of his best animals.  Cain, on the other hand, sacrifices a pile of vegetables. While both brothers offer sacrifices, God only finds favor with Abel’s sacrifice. It is a bigger (actual?) sacrifice, and it is sincere. Abel is “all in” when it comes to foregoing present enjoyment for future (or spiritual) enjoyment. Cain, on the other hand, isn’t offering his best, so … Continue reading

The Transportation Security Administration announced last week the 2017 single-day record for the number of firearms discovered in carry-on bags across the country has been broken. TSA screeners found 26 guns in travelers’ bags on May 3, breaking the standing record of 21 set last March. In all, the agency tasked with protecting mass transport in the nation found 90 firearms last week as well as a several inert “pineapple” style fragmentaton grenades and a variety of knives and edged weapons. The guns were recovered at 15 airports across the country and 21 were found to be loaded. Atlanta Hartsfield and Houston … Continue reading

California is a diverse, populous state full of potential. Yet for residents in twenty-one counties in Northern California—and they are particular about their truly northern status compared to San Francisco—they feel left out. I learned first-hand about the struggles for these rugged salt-of-the earth conservatives during a three-day visit to the region. I gave two speeches on conservative activism and to recruit help for the fight against California’s increasingly unpopular sanctuary state law, SB 54. “North State” is so far north, the closest airport is in Medford, Oregon. The region stretches from California’s northwesternmost county, Del Norte, to the northeastern corner of … Continue reading

It is well-known that Hungary put up a border fence, but how does it really work to keep migrants out? It appears to be a multiple-layer border fence stopping illegal migration to the country almost totally. The legal framework is nothing short of astounding. The main ruse of all Soros-funded NGOs is constant litigation. Today, most illegal immigrants enter countries in the EU legally but overstay or violate whatever visa they may have obtained. When the illegals get detained waiting for a deportation trial, lawyers employed by NGOs funded by billionaire George Soros, have unlimited funds to plead for their … Continue reading
