Several friends on the independent Right have been sending me notes stating their frustration with the Trump administration for playing them for fools. These fellow-members of the independent Right (yes, I’ll admit to my own leanings) complain that after all their efforts in campaigning for the president, he’s turning into a tool of the moderates and neocons. I for one am less critical of Trump, because although I wrote and donated on his behalf, I never thought his election would change much in our society or politics. Nor do I believe that if the improbable happened and Marine Le Pen … Continue reading →

As Mark Twain might say, our students are being taught a lot of facts that just ain’t so – by a lot of academics who know all kinds of things for sure that just ain’t so. The recent science and climate marches underscore both this and the dangers of having such ignorance determine economic and energy policy. Topping my current list of wildly misinformed, malpracticing academics is a University of Michigan history professor who claims plant-fertilizing, life-giving carbon dioxide is more deadly than sarin gas! Perhaps even more dangerous, this ignorance is compounded by rampant intolerance toward other views, and … Continue reading →

It seems like civil unrest has become an increasingly common occurrence in America over the past few years. Since the election, we’ve seen a lot of protests turn violent, and in the years preceding the election, just about any controversial police shooting could spark a riot. As these incidents become commonplace, more people are becoming aware of just how tumultuous our nation really is. They want to know how they can protect themselves from civil unrest or avoid riots in the first place, especially if they live in urban areas. Coincidentally, I have firsthand experience on this subject. Though I … Continue reading →

At a maximum rate of 35 percent, the U.S. corporate tax rate is one of the highest in the world, and the highest of all the advanced, industrialized nations. And then there is corporate income tax on the state level. Forty-four states and the District of Columbia levy a corporate income tax with rates ranging from 4 percent in North Carolina to 12 percent in Iowa. Nevada, Ohio, Texas, and Washington impose more insidious gross receipts taxes instead of corporate income taxes. Delaware and Virginia impose both; South Dakota and Wyoming impose neither. Some companies are fleeing the United States … Continue reading →

Congress ended the week by passing a continuing resolution keeping the government funded for one more week. This stopgap funding bill is designed to give Congress and the White House more time to negotiate a long-term spending bill. Passage of a long-term spending bill has been delayed over objections to Republican efforts to preserve Obamcare’s key features but give states a limited ability to opt out of some Obamacare mandates. This type of brinkmanship has become standard operating procedure on Capitol Hill. The drama inevitably ends with a spending bill being crafted behind closed doors by small groups of members … Continue reading →

Saturday’s White House Correspondents Association dinner exposed anew how far from Middle America our elite media reside. At the dinner, the electricity was gone, the glamor and glitz were gone. Neither the president nor his White House staff came. Even Press Secretary Sean Spicer begged off. The idea of a convivial evening together of our media and political establishments is probably dead for the duration of the Trump presidency. Until Jan. 20, 2021, it appears, we are an us-vs.-them country. As for the Washington Hilton’s version of Hollywood’s red carpet, C-SPAN elected to cover instead Trump’s rollicking rally in a … Continue reading →

Pythagoras, the man behind the Pythagorean theorem was more than just a mathematician. He was a spiritual leader with followers who thought he’d been sent from Heaven. For the Pythagoreans, math was a religious experience and some equations were divine secrets, unfit for public eyes. When your middle school teacher showed you how to find the hypotenuse of a right triangle, you probably didn’t get down on your knees and start worshiping him as a god. But when it first happened in ancient Greece, that was pretty much how people reacted. There was a whole cult behind the man who … Continue reading →

They were so strong in their beliefs that there was a time when it hardly mattered what exactly those beliefs were; they all fused into a single stubbornness.  – Louise Erdrich As Western Civilization continues its entropy-riddled dance of death, the citadels of the political establishment help to maintain the carnival sideshow nature of the event. Like a recently beheaded chicken that flaps about in a bloody show, driven not by the mind but by automatic reflexes, there is little in our culture’s demise that would appeal to intelligent men and women. Those who once turned to Abbott and Costello … Continue reading →

I had two reasons to hold a rooting interest in Trump’s campaign to become president: first, virtually every position he took in the campaign was a poke in the eye of the establishment, neocon, culture-destroying elite.  Second, he said he would make nice with Russia. On the first, the point was not what Trump would or wouldn’t do; the point was that people voted for what he offered.  It is impossible for one man in one election to turn the tide of over 100 years of progressive Marxist / Gramsci-ist philosophy; but with tens of millions of voters behind this, … Continue reading →

The only real constant to be found in both European and US politics is war.  A steady feature of both regions for the past 20+ years has been small, lucrative conflicts waged against countries unable to effectively defend themselves. It doesn’t seem to matter who’s in office in the US — Republican/Democrat, conservative/liberal — there’s a war machine constantly running. My concern is that there’s a building risk that one day that war machine is going to bust apart. And when it does, the long relative peace that the US and Europe have enjoyed (even as they’ve visited a lot … Continue reading →

Netflix’s incredibly niche, personalised subgenres have long captivated movie nerds, from “Steamy Crime Movies from the 1970s” to “Period Pieces About Royalty Based on Real Life”. The genres, based on a complicated algorithm that uses reams of data about users’ viewing habits to recommend exactly what a particular user is into, number in the tens of thousands. When Netflix thinks you’ll like sentimental Spanish-language dramas or gritty tearjerkers, they’ll show up on your home screen, but aside from that, they’re not easy to find. But a simple web address trick has emerged showing how you can find any one of these genres … Continue reading →
