Way back in 2007, when I first became aware of the need to prepare for an increasingly uncertain future, I was convinced that our family needed to move from the city to a hidey-hole or a cabin in the woods, commonly referred to as “rural survival retreats.” Preferably in Idaho. Our retreat would be located at least 25 miles from the nearest interstate and 10 miles from the nearest town, which would have no more than 1000 residents. We would be safe from zombie biker gangs and hoards of desperate people leaving the big cities en masse. Since then, I’ve given a lot of thought to … Continue reading

It is no crime to be ignorant of economics, which is, after all, a specialized discipline and one that most people consider to be a “dismal science.” But it is totally irresponsible to have a loud and vociferous opinion on economic subjects while remaining in this state of ignorance. . – Murray Rothbard . Imagine that your Uncle Willie has, for the past twenty years, indulged in the habit of drinking a quart of Scotch each day. He now suffers from what any competent doctor, after numerous tests, recognizes as cirrhosis of the liver. His doctor informs him that a … Continue reading

Many shooters get their feet wet in competitive shooting by competing in club-level bullseye shooting matches. Most of these are NRA Bullseye matches and require a shooter use a .22 LR pistol or revolver capable of holding at least five rounds either with or absent an unmagnified optical sight. With a three-part course of fire consisting of a slow fire, timed fire and rapid fire string, speed comes second to precision. The one area that snags up many new shooters is what equipment to run. For optic sights anything that will hold zero and features a dot smaller than two minutes of angle … Continue reading

The East Coast is bracing for a hurricane that may rival the ferocity of Superstorm Sandy. Hurricane Joaquin is expected to reach Category 4 proportions today, as it gains strength in the Bahamas. Current projections have it heading due north, and it’s predicted to make landfall in the US this weekend. If you happen to live in South Carolina, North Caroline, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, you’re likely to get hit, particularly in the coastal regions. When you’re thinking about how to prepare for an event like this, it’s best to look back in … Continue reading

It’s not just VW’s problem now. The company may go the way of the Dodo because of brutal fines and crippling lawsuits and media demagoguery that’s turning the VW brand into the automotive equivalent of NAMBLA. But if you think it’ll stop there… . So, where will it stop? How about real-time monitoring of the emissions output of all cars, all the time? This would certainly put the kibosh on “cheating” – by owners as well as car manufacturers. And it’s already in the works. Has been, for some time. This VW debacle will simply provide the necessary justification for implementing … Continue reading

Hey, remember when ol’ Dubya said, “Why is our children not learning?” I think he was on to something there. No, wait, hear me out, I haven’t been on an espresso IV drip. I think we need to apply this theorem to our government. To wit, “Why is our politicians not learning?” The solution is this. Remember back in the day, those of you around my age of 40-and-over, when if you did poorly in school, they made you attend Summer School? Look no further, America! I proudly present: Summer School For Politicians! Yes, it all boils down to education, … Continue reading

The New York Times reports on a new study finding that the greatest risk to infants of being infected with the bacteria that causes whooping cough, or pertussis, now comes from their older siblings. The Times explains that this is “probably a result of waning immunity among children and adolescents who had received the DTaP vaccine.” Indeed, waning immunity is a serious problem with the DTaP combination vaccine (which contains diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis antigens). One recent study published in Pediatrics concluded, “Tdap protection wanes within 2 to 4 years. Lack of long-term protection after vaccination is likely contributing to increases in pertussis among adolescents.” But the Times is misleading its … Continue reading

Contrary to what it might look like, the great passion of my life is neither politics nor the media. My abiding love affair, one that began almost forty years ago and burns just as bright today, is with the movies. Another passion of mine is the written biography. It’s been decades since I’ve read fiction.  Even history isn’t as fascinating as the story of an individual’s life. I’m convinced that in the right hands, a biography of one of my next door neighbors would be more fascinating than anything a Stephen King or Scott Turow could conjure. The human condition … Continue reading

Democracy is self-defeating. Freedom-loving people should place their hopes on secession rather than useless elections. In this recent interview about my book Beyond Democracy I explain the many flaws of this collectivist system. Frank, in your book you strongly criticize democracy, a political system that is seen by most people to have no reasonable alternative. What then goes wrong with democracy? Democracy is collectivist in nature. Democracy allows the majority to force their ideas upon others who do not share these views. Voting enables people to live at the expense of others, or even to expropriate them. This inevitably creates … Continue reading

So Vladimir Putin in his U.N. address summarized his indictment of a U.S. foreign policy that has produced a series of disasters in the Middle East that we did not need the Russian leader to describe for us. Fourteen years after we invaded Afghanistan, Afghan troops are once again fighting Taliban forces for control of Kunduz. Only 10,000 U.S. troops still in that ravaged country prevent the Taliban’s triumphal return to power. A dozen years after George W. Bush invaded Iraq, ISIS occupies its second city, Mosul, controls its largest province, Anbar, and holds Anbar’s capital, Ramadi, as Baghdad turns … Continue reading

PARIS – We took the Eurostar train back to Paris from London last night. In our wagon was a group of Chinese businessmen. Drinking, laughing… they were a bit uncouth by European standards. But they were having a good time. While we were in London, the cabbies were remonstrating against something – ride-sharing app Uber, we suppose. A dozen cabs must have passed before one stopped to pick us up on our way to St. Pancras railway station. Arriving at the Gare du Nord, we feared something similar. We’ve never seen a line of people we wanted to join. The … Continue reading

Americans like to think that we revolted against injustice, embraced liberty, and became a model for a new republic in 1776.  The ideas of that experimental, tiny precursor to the modern American empire have been lost in translation over the centuries.  Human tendencies to love liberty and decentralization, to crave personal independence and the right to build and create their own legacies, to be kings of their own castles, remain, but they are in the mist in 2015 America. For well over a dozen decades, the mythology that we live in the best, most powerful, most influential, and most envied … Continue reading

‘A Saudi prince says 80 percent of the royal family support his call for a palace coup d’état against Saudi Arabia’s ruler, Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, along with his two anointed successors. “It is best for the country for King Salman to step down as well. We cannot take sick people in top leadership,” […]

‘The Israeli regime is contemplating authorizing so-called wildcat settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank near the town of Duma, a court document indicates. Tel Aviv confirmed it was considering the authorization of five outposts, according to the court document, which was first made public by rights group Yesh Din. Yesh Din has filed legal […]
