Amidst All the Lies About Watergate

Despite his historic agreement on the limitation of nuclear warheads with Russia, his normalization of diplomatic and commercial relationships with China, his saving of the state of Israel, his de-segregation of the public schools and his generally progressive domestic policies, President Richard Nixon continues to  get nothing but “foaming- at- the mouth” irrational hatred of the left.

No place was this better demonstrated than my appearance on MSNBC’s “The Point” with Ari Melber. I appeared with former Watergate Prosecutor Nick Ackerman, who ironically interviewed me at age 19 when I was working for the Committee to Re-Elect The President. Ackerman provided MSNBC with documents from the Watergate Special Prosecution Force which the network then promoted as “exclusive”. In fact, the memo’s Ackerman provided surrounding anti-war demonstrations at the Capitol Hill funeral for FBI Director for J. Edgar Hoover were fully reported in James Hougan’s book Secret Agenda.

Incredibly, Ackerman’s animus for Nixon is so great that he claimed that he was certain that if someone were to review all of the Oval Office tapes one would find that Richard Nixon both knew about and approved the Watergate break-in in advance. No scholar or historian has ever made such a claim because it is simply not true.

In fact, Former White House Counsel John Dean claims that he had all of the Oval Office tapes transcribed at his own expense for the purposes of writing his last book “Nixon’s Defense”. Ironically, Dean himself would omit the transcripts of conversations he had with President Nixon on March 15, 16, 17 and 21. Dean omitted these because they put the famous March 23 “cancer on the Presidency” conversation with Nixon into perspective; Dean lied to Nixon about White House involvement in the Watergate break-in for almost 9 months and coached his client, Nixon, on how to perjure himself in the Watergate cover-up.

I documented in my book “Nixon’s Secrets” that John Dean is the man who conceived, planned, pushed and covered up the Watergate break-in. When confronted about discrepancies between his under-oath testimony to both the Senate Watergate Committee and the Watergate Special Prosecutors Office and his book “Blind Ambition” Dean would first blame his ghost writer Taylor Branch and later blame his Editor Alice Mayhew for writing the offending passages in his book. Both Brand and Mayhew have branded this as a lie.

Does anyone think that John Dean would not have exposed the fact that he had proof that Nixon approved the Watergate break-in if he had found it among the Watergate tapes?

When I said on MSNBC that both Watergate Special Prosecutors Archibald Cox and Leon Jaworski and members of the prosecution force had met illegally with Judge John Sirica during the Watergate burglars case, Ackerman went ballistic calling it “utter nonsense”. He is, of course, wrong.

The sad truth, which emerges from Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski’s own confidential Watergate files, is that met secretly with trial judge John Sirica on numerous occasions, in order to work out issues in advance of trial.  Memos uncovered from the National Archives and reproduced in former White House Counsel Geoff Shepard’s recent book detail such secret (and highly improper) meetings occurred on December 15, 1973, February 11, 1974 and twice on March 1, 1974.  Notes from the special prosecutor’s staff meetings allude to several other secret meetings that Jaworski held with Sirica.

If Ackerman is not so blinded by his irrational hatred for Nixon I would recommend that he read “The Real Watergate Scandal” by Former White House Council Geoff Shepard. Shepard meticulously documents the inappropriate meetings between Judge Siricha and the prosecutors that would have gotten all of them disbarred at the time if they had been known. I note that this documentation comes from multiple credible sources as well as the memoirs of several of those involved in the clandestine and highly irregular meetings that were held without the inclusion of the attorneys for the Watergate burglars.

Mr. Ackerman is either blissfully ignorant or blinded by hate. His assertion that proof that Nixon ordered the Watergate break-in exists is false and his claim that the Watergate prosecutors did not meet with Judge Sirica in violation of the law is the real utter nonsense.
