There is something unsettling about how President Trump has surrounded himself with generals. From his defense secretary to his national security advisor to his White House chief of staff, Trump looks to senior military officers to fill key positions that have been customarily filled by civilians. He’s surrounded by generals and threatens war at the drop of a hat. President Trump began last week by threatening “fire and fury” on North Korea. He continued through the week claiming, falsely, that Iran is violating the terms of the nuclear deal. He finally ended the week by threatening a US military attack … Continue reading

The Roman Empire was fuelled by a massive influx of Spanish silver after defeat of the infamous Carthaginian leader Hannibal, new research has found. Hannibal’s demise meant the Romans captured the silver mines of the Iberian peninsula around 211 BC. This flood of Iberian silver significantly changed Rome’s economy, allowing it to become the superpower of its day, experts claim. The findings comes after scientists analysed silver content from a group of coins made either side of the Second Punic War from 218-201 BC, regarded as one of the pivotal events of European history. The really top-drawer dystopian novels end up like news accounts that got published a couple of decades before the events they describe. Orwell’s 1984 came to mid the other day as I rolled up to a pump at an Exxon station and found myself being pestered by a TeeVee built into the gas pump. It came to life – loudly – as soon as I fed my credit card into the reader. Pushy sales pitches masquerading – as online – as “content,” the euphemism for ads from which you will “learn” more as opposed to merely being the object of a sales pitch. Time to buy … Continue reading

Between North Korea’s constant nuclear test provocations and the recent “fire and fury” comments by President Trump, concerns about nuclear conflict are re-ignited around the world. So, how many nuclear weapons are there, and what exactly is happening right now? Let’s launch into it. Buy Silver at Discounted Prices WHO HAS ACCESS TO NUCLEAR WEAPONS? Courtesy of: Visual Capitalist As VisualCapitalist’s map above demonstrates, the United States and Russia still maintain the world’s largest stockpiles of nuclear weapons, holding 92% of the world’s estimated 15,000 nuclear warheads. While today’s arsenals seem quite excessive, they are actually quite modest compared to historical totals … Continue reading

Looking at a French nationalist website Boulevard Voltaire this morning, I notice a repetition of the conventional American media account of what occurred in Charlottesville on Saturday. The news commentary explained that a white racist had run down and killed with a vehicle a thirty-two-year-old “anti-racist” demonstrator, Heather Heyer, while injuring other anti-racists who were protesting a “Unite the Right” rally in downtown Charlottesville. The supposed occasion for the demonstration, the removal of a twenty-six foot statue of Robert E. Lee, did not seem to interest the French commentator, although presumably if French anti-fascists were calling for dismantling statues of … Continue reading

Massive money printing to restart the global economy after the financial crisis has blown an even bigger bubble. Ten years after the last financial crisis, is the world due another one and will it be worse? Despite US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen saying last month that another financial crisis on the scale of the crash that enveloped the world in 2007/8 was unlikely “in our lifetimes”, several respected stock market commentators believe a new disaster could happen within months rather than years, DW reported. Jim Rogers, co-founder of the privately owned Quantum group of hedge funds, told the news … Continue reading

We are told… Except for Native Americans, we are all immigrants or children of immigrants. True enough – true as well for the “Native Americans.”  By the way, open borders didn’t work out so well for this group. The entire history of the United States, until recently, is one of open borders and open immigration. We are also told.  I would like to examine the validity of this statement. Before beginning, I offer a very interesting time-lapse map, depicting immigration into the United States; each dot represents 10,000 people.  Visualizing this history will tell you much about what it meant to be a country … Continue reading

Now that they have failed to repeal or repeal and replace Obamacare, Republicans are once again turning their attention to tax reform. And so are Democrats. Senate Democrats recently issued a letter to President Trump and Senate Republican leaders outlining “three key principles that we believe are prerequisites to any bipartisan tax reform effort”: First, we believe that tax reform should not increase the tax burden on the middle class. In addition, any tax reform effort should not benefit the wealthiest individuals. Second, we believe it is crucial that tax reform legislation go through regular order and not reconciliation. Using … Continue reading

Mass surveillance is about control. It’s promulgators may well claim, and even believe, that it is about control for the greater good, a control that is needed to keep a cap on disorder, to be fully vigilant to the next threat. But in a context of rampant political corruption, widening economic inequalities, and escalating resource stress due to climate change and energy volatility, mass surveillance can become a tool of power to merely perpetuate itself, at the public’s expense. A major function of mass surveillance that is often overlooked is that of knowing the adversary to such an extent that … Continue reading

In 2013, the banks of Cyprus confiscated the deposits of many of their clients. There was no warning, and there was little in the way of explanation, except to say that it was “necessary,” as the banks had been mismanaged to the point that, unless the deposits were confiscated, the banks would fail. Governments and banks the world over nodded in agreement. This was clearly the right thing to do. But, hang on a moment. The depositors had entrusted the banks with the safeguarding of their wealth. This was a case of theft. The bankers had, in effect, robbed the banks. At that … Continue reading

“The main thing that I learned about conspiracy theory is that conspiracy theorists believe in a conspiracy because that is more comforting. The truth of the world is that it is actually chaotic. The truth is that it is not The Iluminati, or The Jewish Banking Conspiracy, or the Gray Alien Theory. The truth is far more frightening – Nobody is in control. The world is rudderless.” – Alan Moore Buy Silver at Discounted Prices Alan Moore, the renowned graphic novel writer, and author of the dystopian classic V for Vendetta, politically identifies as an anarchist.
