President Trump Reportedly Cancels Plans to Move U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem
‘Donald Trump promised repeatedly on the campaign trail that he would move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the nation’s capitol in Jerusalem.
It now seems, however, that the plan has been officially scrapped. The Israeli news organization Arutz Sheva and multiple others were reporting Wednesday that senior U.S. sources had informed the Israeli government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Trump would extend a directive postponing the move for six months. Presidents of both parties have routinely issued this postponement for decades.
Trump once promised to move the embassy to Jerusalem on “day one” of his administration, a position he quickly moderated. Doubts about the final move continued to bubble up after meetings with Jordan’s King Abdullah II and West Bank leader Mahmoud Abbas.
The news was swiftly denied by the Israeli government. “Israel’s position is that all embassies, particularly the US embassy, should be in Israel’s capital – Jerusalem,” said Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office in statement to the Jerusalem Post.’
