Most people don’t go gray overnight; it is a gradual process. But one day, you wake up, look in the mirror and… your hair has gone all white. It’s the same with things like tax-by-mile. This can’t, for practical reasons, be decreed overnight. For one thing, most of the cars in service – or at least, a very large number – are not  equipped from the factory with the necessary technology. But, almost all new cars are equipped with the technology. They have some form of the send-and-receive-capable telemetry system, marketed as “concierge” or “driver assistance” technology. GM’s OnStar was … Continue reading

Friday, a Russian SU-27 did a barrel roll over a U.S. RC-135 over the Baltic, the second time in two weeks. Also in April, the U.S. destroyer Donald Cook, off Russia’s Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad, was twice buzzed by Russian planes. Vladimir Putin’s message: Keep your spy planes and ships a respectable distance away from us. Apparently, we have not received it. Friday, Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work announced that 4,000 NATO troops, including two U.S. battalions, will be moved into Poland and the Baltic States, right on Russia’s border. “The Russians have been doing a lot of snap … Continue reading

No one knows the formula for a successful book. Is it the abundance of description, or perhaps the lack of it? Is it brutally honest language, short sentences, or a bizarre story line? The answer remains wonderfully elusive, although everyone will agree that hard work is key to a book’s success. Well, almost everyone. Every so often, a rogue writer comes along with big dreams and a sneaky scheme, duping critics, and readers alike. And while some maintain honesty is the best policy, that certainly wasn’t the case for these 10 literary hoaxers. 10 Naked Came The Stranger Naked Came the … Continue reading

“The most striking fact about the story of Rip Van Winkle is not that he slept 20 years, but that he slept through a revolution. While he was peacefully snoring up on the mountain, a great revolution was taking place in the world – indeed, a revolution which would, at points, change the course of history. And Rip Van Winkle knew nothing about it; he was asleep.”—Martin Luther King Jr., Commencement Address for Oberlin College The world is disintegrating on every front—politically, environmentally, morally—and for the next generation, the future does not look promising. As author Pema Chodron writes in … Continue reading

James Monroe was born today (April 28) in 1757. He is one of the more misunderstood and maligned Presidents of the United States. Historians typically rank him as no better than “average.” This is unjust and an indictment of the historical profession. Monroe, they suggest, lacked leadership and energy in the executive office. He should have been more like Lincoln or F. Roosevelt, two “great” presidents according to their standards. One History Channel production suggested that the only positive thing to say about Monroe is that he was honest. Yet, if these historians ranked presidents based on the way the … Continue reading

Last week the House Armed Services Committee approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act requiring women to register with Selective Service. This means that if Congress ever brings back the draft, women will be forcibly sent to war. The amendment is a response to the Pentagon’s decision to allow women to serve in combat. Supporters of drafting women point out that the ban on women in combat was the reason the Supreme Court upheld a male-only draft. Therefore, they argue, it is only logical to now force women to register for Selective Service. Besides, supporters of extending the … Continue reading

“I am getting more and more convinced that the war-peace question is the key to the whole libertarian business.” ~ Murray Rothbard That our enemy is the state, there is no question. As Rothbard explains: Briefly, the State is that organization in society which attempts to maintain a monopoly of the use of force and violence in a given territorial area; in particular, it is the only organization in society that obtains its revenue not by voluntary contribution or payment for services rendered but by coercion. While other individuals or institutions obtain their income by production of goods and services … Continue reading

Can a society without certitudes, without norms, without a generally accepted code of conduct survive? Yes, but survival is not the issue. A society that is fundamentally transformed may retain its name and geographic boundaries, but at its cultural core, it is different. Thus, the greatest danger the American Empire faces is not war with ISIS, or China, or Russia. And it certainly is not manmade global warming, which is nothing more than Glorified fiction. The real danger America faces is from the manmade secular-progressive war that is becoming increasingly bizarre and destructive. Transgender bathrooms … a fictitious war on … Continue reading

I will begin where I ended in my last post on this topic: The Turkish Bazaar Ankara aids, trains, shelters and otherwise supports those causing the destructive conditions in Syria and Iraq.  Members of the President’s family are allegedly in the middle of a smuggling operation for oil from the war-torn regions. Turkey is a key contributor to causing the conditions necessary to create a flood of refugees. And Europe is willing to pay Turkey to help solve this problem. It should be obvious that the problem will not be solved by Turkey even after these measures. Visa-Free Travel One … Continue reading
